THE REARVIEW MIRROR IS SMALL FOR A REASON!

I was thinking this morning... Yesterday, I dressed up for an outing, entered my car and engaged the reverse gear.

As I backed out of my garage, the rearview mirror wasn't giving me sufficient visibility. I checked the side mirrors and eventually turned my neck. In this economy, nobody wants an unbudgeted panel-beating expenditure. That na gbese.

Driving away, I wondered why the rearview mirror was so small compared to the windscreen.

My thoughts drifted to my recent decision to change course after many years on a familiar path. Strangely, the more I tried looking forward, the more my mind wandered backwards.

Then it dawned on me. The rearview mirror is small for a reason!

This reminded me of the 28th Commonwealth summit that begins today 1st November 2026, in St John's Antigua and Barbuda, where some countries are demanding apologies, reparations and debt cancellation from Britain over its role in the slave trade. Slave trade that was abolished in 1860.

The historical injustice deserves acknowledgment and redress. But I wonder whether equal energy is being devoted to building stronger economies and better futures by the affected nations. We must learn from history without becoming prisoners of it. The rearview mirror is small for a reason.

Life is similar. Yesterday's achievements, disappointments and memories are important, but they mustn't obstruct tomorrow's possibilities.

Philippians 3:13 reminds us to forget those things behind and reach towards those ahead.

The past is a place of reference, not a place of residence.

As we entered a new month today, I look forward  to embracing a new chapter, and learn to appreciate the journey behind while trusting God for the road ahead.

After all, the God who navigated me through yesterday's potholes hasn't forgotten tomorrow's route!

Keep your rearview mirror, but give your windscreen the attention it deserves.

Stay hopeful. God's got our back.

Happy New Month!
